The November 2019 Maine Filmmaker Showcase features the 2015 Maine-made film NEPTUNE, followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Derek Kimball and Allen Baldwin. This special event will also include NEPTUNE’s Blu-Ray release–get your copy on November 8!

DECEMBER 13: Maine Filmmaker Showcase: HOLLY STAR
The Maine Film Association and Portland Media Center’s December 2019 Maine Filmmaker Showcase features the 2018 Maine-made film HOLLY STAR, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and members of the cast and crew. Come celebrate the season with this fun holiday comedy filmed in Biddeford, Saco, and Kennebunk! The screening of HOLLY STAR will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Michael Nickles, writer-director-producer, Scott Taylor, producer, and Pam Chabora, actor.

MAINE FILM NEWS: Making It in Maine

THE OPPOSITE OF CLEVELAND Now Streaming!
USM screenwriting teacher Dan Chaimowitz, after writing dozens of scripts during his 20-year career as a screenwriter, has directed his first feature-length film, and it’s now available to view online! You can catch the Maine-made romantic comedy THE OPPOSITE OF CLEVELAND at  danchaimowitz.com or stream it for free with Amazon Prime. BIMs Work Towards Feature Film Completion
The BIMs, Portland-based filmmaker Keyson Jones’ muppet-esque independent-filmmaking crew, embodies the positivity and creativity of the Maine indie filmmaking scene. Jones is working on a feature-length film of the six puppets’ adventures in their effort to make it from Maine to Hollywood, and recently launched a kickstarter campaign to fund the production. UPCOMING SCREENINGS & FESTIVALS

Nov. 6-10: Bates Film Festival in Lewiston
The Bates Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday, November 6, and will feature 10 feature-length films, shorts, and panel discussions. The festival is free and open to the public– check out their complete program on their website, and get to some screenings!

Nov. 8: NEPTUNE in Portland
Portland Media Center and the MFA present NEPTUNE, the 2015 Maine-made film by Derek Kimball, as part of its Maine Filmmaker Showcase Series. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Kimball and Producer Allen Baldwin. Come learn about how these film pros made a feature-length film on the Maine coast, and pick up a copy of the film on Blu-Ray– available starting this Friday! Learn more at mainefilm.org/neptune.

Nov. 9: Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Belfast
The Midcoast Conservancy will host the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Saturday, November 9, at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast. Enjoy 10 environmentally-themed short films– just $10 for adults, $7 students or children over 10; kids 10 and younger are free. Learn more at midcoastconservancy.org.

Nov. 15-21: THE SOUND OF SILENCE in Brunswick
As part of its independent film series, Frontier in Brunswick presents THE SOUND OF SILENCE, starring Peter Sarsgaard, Rashida Jones, and Tony Revolori. The drama is written and directed by Michael Tyburski, and is “a quietly moving portrait of a harmony-obsessed man learning to embrace the dissonances of human emotion, The Sound of Silence invites viewers to hear the world with fresh ears.” Learn more and get your tickets at explorefrontier.com.

Nov. 15-21: PARASITE in Rockland
“Bong Joon Ho brings his singular mastery home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale,” a film that you can catch at the Strand in Rockland later this month. Korean with English subtitles. Learn more about PARASITE, and find ticket information at rocklandstrand.com.

Nov. 21: VOYAGEUR, 1608 in Portland
The Portland Museum of Art and the Alliance Française du Maine present VOYAGEUR, 1608, by director Jean Dulon. “A docu-fiction filmed as an historical documentary, mixing past and present in a new narrative form, this 10,000 mile road movie searches for a path in the past on the traces of the Nouvelle France in Northern America.” The screening will be followed by a discussion with MFA member Alban Maino. Nov. 24: LORO in Portland
SPACE Gallery in Portland will screen Paolo Sorrentino’s LORO, a film that depicts the lives of the businessmen and politicians who were close to Silvio Berlusconi in the years between 2006 and 2009. The screening will be followed by a talk back with Bowdoin professor and MFA board member Allison Cooper. Learn more and get your tickets here.
