The Maine Film Association’s producing workshop is dedicated to the art and craft of independent producing. We are pleased to launch this endeavor in partnership with Matt Perez-Mora, a Los Angeles-based commercial, branded content, and documentary producer. Matt is currently working with MFA member Ben Severance at Timber+Frame of Portland to produce a film chronicling a Chilean salmon farmer and his life in Patagonia.
In this immersive producing workshop, participants explore the realm and responsibilities of the work done by a producer for short-form docu-style branded content. The Produce It Now workshop with Matt Perez-Mora is taught from a down-to-earth, grassroots perspective, and is full of information and tips that you can immediately put to use in your own project.
The workshop examines the role and importance of a creative producer to develop a project from its concept and Request For Proposal (RFP) to completion and multi-platform distribution. As you will learn, the producers job extends far beyond drafting a budget. He or she needs to be in sync with the creative team to acquire and develop material, attract above and below-the-line talent, deal with agencies and clients, spend the budget properly, and organize a shoot’s logistics to guarantee completion and to achieve creative success. The workshop will explore the producer’s roles and interactions with writers, directors, the various production teams and departments, and, perhaps most importantly, relationship building with clients and sustaining those partnerships long after the project is completed.
We will watch and discuss branded content spots as case studies, using them as reference when discussing what tools, budgets, and crew are needed. The class will examine how a producer may choose and work with key production personnel, review legal issues, decide on proper insurance coverage, supply basic contracts, and exemplify the skill and art of deal-making.
At the end of the day, participants will gain the knowledge of how to turn an idea or concept into a tangible project.
The Produce It Now workshop is recommended for producers from all genres, as well as directors and writers who want to understand the dynamics of working with a producer, or in so many cases, who want or need to be their own producer.
Please bring your laptop to download sample clips and files.
